Trusting the Process with Hon. Kelvin Goertzen - The 10-Minute Leader S1 Ep 4
Hon. Kelvin Goertzen who served as Deputy Premier of Manitoba and later as Premier joined me to discuss leadership.
He has previously served as the Minister of Health, Seniors and Active Living, the Minister of Education and Training, the Minister of Legislative of Public Affairs and has been the Minister responsible for Immigration.
He also had the honor of serving as the MLA for the Steinbach constituency since 2003.
His community and provincial service have earned him many awards including the H.O.P.E. Medal of Honour by the Lions Club of Manitoba as well as the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Governor General of Canada.
Note: On the date of recording, Minister Goertzen held a different position in the Manitoba Government.
Mr. Goertzen's thoughts on leadership as a public servant are very thoughtful. His position means he can't please everyone, yet he uses grace and patience to try and be an influencer of others.
Listen to this episode of my interview with him and learn:
- Why leadership is self-sacrificing and self-rewarding at the same time and why you should not be threatened when your people reach their full potential.
- Vision casting as the hardest part of being a leader and why you should include your team early on in this process.
- The best part of being a leader is reaching a certain maturity level in the organization where people can voice out their opinions / ideas.
- How does he navigate the challenges that arise when there are sometimes vastly different opinions and viewpoints on certain topics and policies in his role as an elected official in a leadership role and why it’s important to recognize that you’re not going to satisfy everybody.
- That trusting the process will bring you comfort that you made the decision the right way.
- The advice that he gives to other leaders as we continue to navigate the world of the pandemic and the importance of protecting your family and those closest around you amidst all these.
- How his faith commitment relates to his role as a leader.
- If his job is not the thing that he values the most then what is it?
- His answer to our fun question.
And so much more…
